We went on our first real training ride on Saturday, and he did wonderfully as usual. We lead a lot of the way, since he seemed to be a bit overwhelmed at the back and I felt like he thought he was constantly being left behind. He did a great job mostly, and only caused one or two rear-endings when he stopped to look at a boulder just off-trail. We also saw a bull, which he looked at, but otherwise ignored. Good boy! We'll need to work on water crossings, as he attempted to jump a 15-foot creek. I stayed on without a problem, but he'll need to nicely WALK through those. For our second water crossing, I ended up dismounting and leading him through. He tried to drink there, but I don't think he's figured out drinking with a bit yet. The second water crossing was small, and the steep-ish banks on both sides were muddy. I had visions of sprained tendons at that one, as I was SURE he'd try to jump it as well. Ah, well. My wet, cold feet were hardly a price to pay for a happy healthy horse.
It was nice riding with my husband and his horse. We're going out tomorrow for a Thanksgiving ride, where I hope to remember to bring my camera!
